Why is December 4th Celebrated as Navy Day in INDIA ??

Indian Navy Day is celebrated on December 4 at all Naval bases in India to commemorate the launch of Operation Trident against Pakistan during the 71′ Indo-Pak War. On December 4, the Indian Navy carried out Operation Trident, which was a devastating attack on Pakistan Naval Headquarters of Karachi. The attack was successful as it sank a minesweeper, a destroyer and an ammunition supply ship.

Operation Trident:
In the attack, Indian Navy sank four Pakistani vessels and ravaged the Karachi harbour fuel fields, killing over 500 Pakistani Navy personnel. Three missile boats of the Indian Navy, INS Nipat, INS Nirghat and INS Veer, played a pivotal role in the attack.

As the Indian Navy advanced, Pakistani vessels too approached to defend the Karach harbour, INS Veer fired its first missile onto Pakistani vessel Muhafiz, a minesweeper, sinking it with the entire crew.

All you need to know about the victory:

  • Operation Trident was launched on Karachi which was the headquarters of the Pakistan Navy.
  • The Indian Navy planned the attack at night as Pakistan did not have aircrafts that could carry out bombings at night.
  • The Indian attack consisted of 3 Vidyut class missile boats, 2 anti-submarines and a tanker.
  • After the operation, there were no casualties from India, though 5 Pakistani sailors and over 700 men were injured.

Earlier, there used to be good media coverage of Navy Day and . But , now a days media is more interested in TRP generating political and sensational news and ignoring importance of Navy day and its celebrations !! Some media houses don’t even about Navy day . Also, most citizens of India are not aware of Navy Day and its significance.Yes, very few civilian citizens know why Navy Day is celebrated – and why on the 4th of December.

Being Indian we should aware of our Indian victories and we should show respect our armed forces of India .
