VISAKHAPATNAM: In a first in the county , the much-awaited hovercraft project is set to take off in Visakhapatnam in January . The project got a major boost on Thursday with Hoverdock, which is executing the project in association with the state government, procuring four hovercraft vehicles from St Petersburg in Russia, at the cost of Rs 3.6 crore.
According to Times Of India , Hoverdock managing director D Chaitanya Varma said that by the second week of December, the vehicles would arrive in Visakhapatnam port. “Hopefully , we will start operating the vehicles for tourists from January 1 after completing all the formalities,” he said.
Apart from working out logistics, platform for the vehicles will be identified. Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) expressed willingness to give 3,700 sq yards opposite Hotel Sea Pearl on RK Beach Road to set up the platform at a rent of `15 lakh per annum. “We are awaiting land allocation from GVMC.By New Year, we will try to launch the project,” he added.
The MoU for the projectwas signed between Hoverdock and tourism department during CII summit in 2016.Two five-seater hovercraft, one seven-seater and one nineseater hovercraft will be operated in phase I. A five-seater hovercraft costs `50 lakh, while a nine-seater costs `1.30 cr.
Contractors are looking to charge `300-350 per head for a 15-minute to 30-minute ride.”Price and schedule of the operation will be finalised soon,” Varma added.
