An Oceanarium is a large -scale set-up for display of marine organisms in their natural habitat. Besides being a recreational facility, Oceanariums provide first-hand information on (i) marine biodiversity, (ii) behavioral patterns, (iii) feeding mechanisms, (iv) locomotory patterns and provide excellent opportunity to undertake research on various aspects of marine biology. Oceans are rich in flora and fauna which are unknown to common man. Many of the oceanic ecosystems such as the coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass ecosystem, coastal ecosystem, etc are fragile and delicate and needs protection and conservation to maintain them in healthy condition. Community participation is the key in the conservation of these ecosystems.
A sea food businessman from West Godavari recently mooted a proposal to set up an oceanarium in the port city to promote tourism as well as to enable people and researchers to study various marine species.Sources said if the proposal is accepted by the state government, then it will the first-of-its-kind set up in the country. “We have received the proposal that will cost the state around Rs 400 crore. If it materializes, it will be useful for various universities and researchers,” as said by district collector pravin kumar.
The district administration is ready to provide a 10-acre land to set up the oceanarium at Rushikonda. It will be a tunnel-shaped structure that will have a 360-degree view with around 20,000 aquatic species brought from various countries. The central government’s permission will be needed for importing the species. The state government has reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the project and it will be developed under the PPP mode, sources said.
The detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared in next six months and work begins instantly after it is finalized by concerned authorities.it is expected to complete in next two years from the date of its initiation. The designing of the oceanarium will be awarded to either Chinese or Australian company’s where such structures are popular. The tunnel can accommodate around 3000 people at a time and it will have 5 floors adding parking space for nearly 2000 vehicles.
