VISAKHAPATNAM: A night market is being planned at RK Beach with the inspiration of Saturday Night Bazar at Arpora in Goa.
The project will include live music, souvenir kiosk and other basic facilities for the convenience of tourists besides a market selling clothes, shoes, bags, handicrafts, jewellery, leather accessories, home decor, festoons, spices among other local unique varieties.
Occasional food festivals will also be included in the project which will be open on weekends, as per the blue print accessed by TOI.
M/S Hoverdock, Visakhapatnam, has proposed the project to the tourism department and the state government has agreed to it. The concerned authorities including those from the department of municipal administration and urban development (MA&UD) have been instructed to provide requisite site for the market.
Accordingly, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has agreed to provide 3,775 square yards on lease at RK Beach to Hoverdock to set up the night market along with a few other tourism attractions.
“We are waiting to receive the site assured by the GVMC to start works on the projects. We hope to get it this month. We initially decided to set up the night market on every Saturday from 6pm to 2am or 3am,” said R Meher Chaitana Varma, proprietor of Hoverdock.
Varma further said that the night market is a popular beach tourism project in places like Phuket in Thailand, Andaman Nicobar Islands, Laguna in the US, Miami Beach, Gold Coast in Australia and in Goa.
The project will help the tourism department attract tourists from across the globe as well as provide 100 direct and 500 indirect employment opportunities to tribals, artisans, and handicraft workers.
“Seafood and traditional dishes will also be a part of the night market,” Varma told TOI.
